Award-winning luthier William Hancock (William Hancock Guitars) handcrafted this beautiful Torres classical guitar.
 
A full-sized classical guitar mold shape constructed using both Australian tonewoods and repurposed timbers which William made in 2020 during the Covid lockdowns in Melbourne …… and while he was moving both house and workshop.
 
Repurposed piano timbers and materials were used in the inlay set upgrades consisting of the rosette, headstock fascia and tailpiece. 
 
While guitar playing would not be what is it today without the 1937 instrument created by Hermann Hauser and popularized by Spanish maestro Andres Segovia, Hauser actually began making guitars based on the Spanish models which were derived from the designs of early classical guitarist and luthier Antonio de Torres (1817–1892).
 
This Ebony and Ivory “Torres” style guitar is the culmination of centuries of classical guitar making, largely inspired by the work of the great luthier Antonio de Torres but with modern design elements that make this guitar accessible to guitarists today.
 
Torres – often referred to as the Stradivari of the classical guitar - pioneered many classical guitar design elements that are still seen in modern guitars. “Torres” guitars are noteworthy for their simplicity and subtlety and well known for their surprisingly huge sound, despite their small and lightweight frames.

Will believes the sound of the instrument is paramount because good sound and great music are cornerstones to a healthy and happy human condition.
 
In November 2022 William won Gold in the Better Future New York Design Awards for Design Education with his ‘Toddler’ model guitar specifically designed for children!
 
Repurposing old timbers for new guitars has been an active part of his creative enterprise since he started it. While having repurposed a wide variety of waste and reclaimed timbers in his work as a luthier, he has discovered the best repurposing timbers for guitars come from old pianos. Part of the reason for this is that the tonewoods used originally have been seasoned beautifully.
 
Will has collaborated with Pianos Recycled in our three exhibitions and contributed two exemplary examples of his work for our most recent exhibition, The Piano Transformation Design Challenge 2023.
