The early pianos were made by hand individually one by one by craftsmen.

The intricacy of piano case designs vary by maker, artisan, and quality and cost of the piano (among other factors).

Nineteenth century piano makers competed to produce pianos that would be appealing to potential customers as fine pieces of furniture.

To that degree they employer craftsmen who were master woodworkers and many piano panels are adorned with unique hand carved moldings.

Many different types of wood are used in a piano for various parts. These include birch, maple, fir, oak, mahogany, ebony, spruce and many other exotic woods.

Pianos were built as both instruments and pieces of fine furniture to satisfy the demand from the rising middle class in nineteenth century western countries. Piano making businesses would employ not only specialist instrument makers but also skilled cabinet makers to handcraft the piano case and decorative moldings.
