A century ago, families would gather around the piano for moments of song and joy. This handcrafted Christmas Tree is a chance for the piano to once again be part of family joy and maybe inspire them to song.

Superbly handcrafted by Sean Scully (Port Phillip Mens Shed, South Melbourne, Vic, Australia)
 
Minimalist and contemporary in design. With striking lines and a clean, natural finish, each of its 139 leaves can be individually positioned to create a number of configurations.
 
The tree – including base - folds completely flat for easy storage when not on display.
 
A labour of love for Sean, the tree was crafted over 40 hours and each frond was individually cut and prepared by hand. Sean's Christmas Tree featured in our most recent Piano Transformation Design Challenge exhibition which was part of Melbourne Design Week 2023.

Wood from at least 6 different antique - but unwanted - upright pianos contributed nearly a dozen side panels for the leaves. Legs from the donor pianos were used to create the unique folding base. 
 
"The most satisfying part was designing and building the folding base", says Sean and adds, "the biggest challenge was the mental focus needed for the repetitive task of cutting each the hundreds of fronds by hand".
 
A passionate maker, Sean has lived many lives---he's been a mechanic, a scaffolder, and a manager for global transport logistics company Toll. He has also worked as a stage manager for "Midsummer Night's Dream" among a host of other jobs in the entertainment industry. 
 
Woodworking is a relatively new interest. 
 
Sean is a member of the Port Phillip Men's Shed. He would like to thank fellow Shedders for their support and Eileen and Peter in particular who provided valuable help.
