In an upright piano, the dampers can easily be spotted if you peer inside a piano. They are pressed against the strings and lift up when you press the right pedal. A good piano will have its damper UNDER the hammers. A lower quality, antiquated piano will have its dampers OVER the hammers, obscuring them from view.

It wasn't until the late-1700s that mass production of screws was made possible. Scientific instrument maker Jesse Ramsden invented the first screw-cutting lathe in 1770, which inspired subsequent inventors to create machinery for mass production of the screw.
 
Screws are relative newcomers to the production of furniture and pianos and did not become a common woodworking fastener until more efficient tools were developed around the end of the 18th century.
 
Screws with points are built after 1890.
